Insert Plate and Top Layout

The nominal centered layout leaves 11⅜ inches at the left and right and 6⅛ inches at the front and back.

Mark one centerline 16 inches from either side and a second 12 inches from the front or back. Center the actual plate where the lines cross. A nominal 9¼-by-11¾-inch plate leaves 11⅜ inches of tabletop on both sides and 6⅛ inches at both ends.

How to Build the DIY Router Table

Step 1: Cut and Label Every Part

Cut the large rectangular parts first, then use the remaining plywood for the fence and dust hood.

Break down the ¾-inch plywood using a track saw or a circular saw against a verified straight guide. Cut both side panels together from the same rip so they remain identical. Then cut the bottom, divider, top stretchers and door. Finish with the narrower fence parts and dust-hood pieces.

Step 3: Cut the Insert-Plate Recess

Trace the real plate and test the recess frequently; the final plate must be supported and flush.

Lay out the crossing centerlines, place the actual plate on the tabletop and trace it. Make a precise template that matches the plate’s outline and corner radius. Secure the template so it cannot move. Rout the recess in shallow passes until it is just deep enough for the plate to sit flush with the surface.

Rough-cut the smaller inner opening with a jigsaw, staying inside the line. Finish it to the nominal 8¼-by-10¾-inch opening only after checking underside clearance. Install commercial levelers or threaded inserts where they fully support the plate. The plate should lift out without binding but must not slide during use.

Step 4: Assemble the Cabinet Carcass

The divider creates a closed router bay above and open accessory storage below.

Place the two sides with their inside faces upward. The bottom panel fits between them with its lower face flush with the side-panel bottoms. Position the divider so its top face is exactly 16 inches above the cabinet bottom. That means the divider’s lower face is 15¼ inches above the bottom edge.

Use glue and 1¼-inch pocket-hole screws from the hidden faces, or use suitable cabinet screws through carefully predrilled and countersunk side panels. Clamp the assembly to a square before tightening. Add the two 28½-by-3-inch top stretchers between the sides, flush with the top edges—one at the front and one at the rear.

Step 5: Add the Back, Dust Port and Ventilation

The full back resists racking while the upper openings serve dust collection and router cooling.

Square the cabinet by comparing its diagonals, then fasten the 30-by-34½-inch back with glue and 1-inch screws. Keep the back flush with the side edges. The ½-inch panel completes the 22-inch cabinet depth and locks the box square.

Cut a 2½-inch port opening high in the router compartment where the hose will not interfere with the motor or height adjustment. Add ventilation slots or screened openings on opposite sides of the upper compartment. Dust collection needs replacement air, and the router needs manufacturer-specified cooling clearance. Step 6: Fit the Door and External Safety Switch

Use a commercial router-table switch; do not install homemade wiring inside the wooden cabinet.

The upper opening is approximately 28½ inches wide by 15½ inches high. The 28¼-by-15¼-inch inset door creates a ⅛-inch reveal on all four sides. Fasten upward through the front and rear stretchers and the four hardwood cleats with screws that cannot reach the top face.

Do not glue the tabletop permanently to the cabinet. Screws make the top removable if it is ever damaged or replaced with a different plate system. Confirm that every screw lies clear of the recess, levelers and router.

Step 8: Build the Adjustable Fence and Dust Hood

The two 14-inch faces begin with a four-inch center gap and slide inward for smaller bits.

Join the 32-by-4-inch fence back at 90 degrees to the 32-by-5½-inch base. Add the two 4-inch triangular braces behind it while keeping the front face straight. Build the centered dust hood from the 5-by-4-inch back, 5-by-3-inch top and two 4-by-3-inch sides, then install the 2½-inch port.

Mount the two 14-by-3½-inch faces so they can slide horizontally. A four-inch starting gap leaves room for common bits, but the faces should close farther for smaller cutters while remaining safely clear of the spinning bit. The fence can lock with clamps at both table edges. If you add T-track, use compatible hardware and place it where it cannot weaken the plate recess.

Step 9: Mount the Router to the Insert Plate

Use only the screw pattern and hardware approved for your router and plate.

Unplug the router and remove the bit. Place the plate upside down on padded blocks so it cannot be scratched. Center the router’s collet opening beneath the plate ring and mark only the holes required by the manufacturer. Predrill or countersink exactly as the plate instructions specify.
